Cyber Security CRC Scholarship

The Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CSCRC) is a public, not-for-profit company focused on delivering research with impact and solving real-world cybersecurity problems with innovative, industry-driven solutions. The Cyber Security CRC aims to inspire the next generation of cybersecurity professionals through working with some of the best cybersecurity researchers in Australia.   

UNSW Canberra is looking for talented PhD, Master by Research candidates, and honours students to join our team in solving challenging problems across all areas in cybersecurity – from technical to human aspects. Potential postdoctoral research fellows may also be interested in developing research proposals with the team for consideration. 

Successful candidates will be awarded a CSCRC graduate research scholarship or postdoctoral research fellowship.

Stipend

CSCRC Research Themes 

  • Resilient Systems: To automate the assessment of high-volume network traffic to identify ‘red flags’ that enable cybersecurity professionals to better prioritize their time on higher value-adding activities. 
  • IoT Systems –Security and Configuration: To develop new approaches to identify threats and secure the deployment of the Internet of Things. 
  • Next Generation Authentication Technologies: To develop authentication technologies to protect access to control systems used in the water, power, and mining industries. 
  • Emerging Threats – Network Forensics and Response: To develop techniques to trace (at a forensic level) where cyber threats have originated and automate this ability across complex infrastructure and architecture environments. 
  • Platform and Architecture for Cyber Security as a Service: To develop a secure integrated platform that will enable cybersecurity providers to offer robust security services. 
  • Security Automation and Orchestration: To develop technologies for security orchestration that can be provisioned as cybersecurity solutions as a service. 
  • Privacy Preserving Data Sharing in a Hyperconnected World: To develop techniques for sharing threat data whilst ensuring data remains confidential, and provide algorithms for accessing and analysing threat data, metadata and patterns. 
  • Real-Time Monitoring of Cyber Security Threats: To develop visualisation techniques that enable rapid situational awareness of cyber threats and risks that will deliver confidence in the quality and provenance of shared information. 

Eligibility  

  • PhD: Candidates must have completed an appropriate bachelor's degree with honours from the University of New South Wales or completed an equivalent qualification at another university or tertiary institution.  
  • MRes: Candidates must have completed an appropriate bachelor's degree with honours (Class 2 or above) or completed an equivalent qualification at another university or tertiary institution. 
  • Post doc: Candidates must have obtained a PhD (or soon to be awarded) in a relevant discipline such as computer science, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, information technology, communication engineering or similar. 
  • In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of high-quality academic and professional qualifications may be approved by the Committee and permitted to enrol for the degree.

Prospective applicants should discuss their qualifications and research proposal with UNSW Canberra Cyber’s Director of Research, Professor Monica Whitty. In addition to an Expression of Interest (EOI), you will also need to provide: 

  • 2-page CV 
  • Copies of your Academic Transcripts 
  • Research proposal that aligns with one of the CSCRC research themes outlined above.   
  • A one-page statement outlining which CSCRC Scholarship Category (PhD, MRes or Post doc) you are seeking to apply for, and why you would be a suitable CSCRC Scholar.
