Shirley Scott

Head of School

Shirley Scott is Professor of International Law and International Relations and Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at UNSW Canberra.
 
Professor Scott’s research lies at the intersection of International Law and International Relations. One of her most significant contributions to scholarship in International Law has been her theory of international law as ideology. She has also contributed widely to on topics including the engagement of the United States with international law, Antarctic governance, Antarctica, and climate change and international security.
 
In 2019 Professor Scott was elected President of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL). She was also appointed a Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs.

Professor Scott has made significant contributions to learning and teaching at UNSW and to scholarship on assessment. She is co-Director of the Scientia Education Academy at UNSW and during her appointment as Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences she has led educational initiatives at School, college and university level.

In 2014, Professor Scott published an article proposing a student-centred definition of feedback, for which she received the UNSW Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences prize for Best SOTL (Scholarship on Teaching and Learning) Publication. Professor Scott was made Fellow of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) in 2015.
