Special Collections

The Academy Librarys' Special Collections were established to support UNSW Canberra’s teaching, learning and research needs. Current strengths are in the areas of Military History and Australian Literature. Collections include over 300 manuscript collections and 13,000 rare books and items.

The subject content of the Special Collections complements the Academy Library's collections of excellence and is focused on supporting the current and emerging teaching, research and learning needs of students and staff at UNSW Canberra.

World War I diaries held at the Academy Library that have been digitised to commemorate the centenary of World War I. Including the diaries of William Hilton Saunders, Colonel Alfred Hobart Sturdee and Sir General Vernon Ashton Hobart Sturdee.

The John Howard Collection represents a nationally significant record of Australia’s recent history. It comprises more than 10,000 items of personal papers and official records from the early years of John Howard’s political career to his time as Treasurer, Leader of the Opposition and Prime Minister, covering the period from 1974 to 2007.

The Academy Library is home to a collection of literary manuscripts that is of national significance and a collection of military manuscripts that is of growing significance.
