Professional and Teaching Experience
Dr Nick Jans (Brigadier Ret'd) researches in the areas of leadership; followership; organisational culture and change; military sociology; career development; employee commitment and engagement. He is on the editorial boards of Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources and Armed Forces & Society. A graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon (Class of 61), he served in the Australian Regular Army in field artillery, training, and personnel policy development and is currently a Brigadier in the Army Reserve.
On retiring from the full-time Army in 1985 he co-founded Sigma Consultancy, which pioneered the application of advanced market research techniques to personnel issues, and applied this approach in consultancy assignments with the Australian Defence Force and the US Navy. He has had an active consulting career, specialising in military leadership and strategic human resource management as key mechanisms for organisational change.
He has been a senior lecturer at the University of Canberra and currently holds visiting fellowships at both the ADC's Centre for Defence Leadership & Ethics, and the School of Business, UNSW Canberra. He was an adviser to the US Army in its recent Campaign for the Military Professional Ethic, and a team member of the 2011 ADF Personal Conduct Review.
