Professional and Teaching Experience

Garrett joined the School of Business, UNSW Canberra in 2002 and has taught since then in the areas of technology management and strategic management. He was Deputy Head of the School (2010-2011) and led the successful application by the School for AACSB accreditation.

Garrett’s research is in innovation management, with a particular focus in recent years on the contribution of innovation in low-carbon technologies to meeting the challenge of global warming. Other areas include the interaction of public funded research and the private sector, and innovation in the chemicals, biotechnology and minerals industries.

Prior to joining UNSW Garrett was a senior adviser in CSIRO Head Office of the Chief Executive with responsibility for minerals & energy research planning. His earlier career included extended phases as head of the economics section of the federal environment department, as a policy economist in the OECD Environment Directorate in Paris, and as an industrial research chemist.
