MERS Comes Second!

UNSW Canberra design team gets second place out of 19 international contestants in the 3rd Mission Idea Contest: 4th year engineering students Scott Johnson, Kieran Davis and Mitchell Woodward contributed to the deisgn led by Dr Tuttle and Assoc Prof Neely.

Feb-March 2013: Dr Tuttle was invited to manage the thermal testing of the Mercury Transfer Module of ESA's BepiColombo mission for Astrium GmbH at ESA's ESTEC facility in the Netherlands. (see http://www.esa.int/ger/ESA_in_your_country/Germany/Es_wird_heiss_fuer_BepiColombo)

Professional History:

Dr Tuttle has worked on 27 different spacecraft and mission designs.

1996: PhD at the University of Queensland - Thrust Balance for Hypersonic Wind Tunnels

1996-1998: Lecturer at the University of Queensland & Research Engineer testing HYFLEX for NASDA in the T4 shock tunnel

1998: Thermal Engineer at Matra Marconi Space (UK) working on design of the Rosetta spacecraft for ESA

2000: Thermal Architect at Astrium UK leading the design team in charge of the Rosetta spaceraft thermal design, manufacture, testing, launch and in-orbit support. Helped develop and test new manufacturing techniques for the thermal control system of the Eurostar 3000 series of communications satellites.

2002-2005: Thermal architect at Astrium UK for various European missions, such as Lisa Pathfinder, ExoMars Rover; spaceraft testing (MetOp, in Toulouse); system engineering & business development for the microSAR folding radar satellite; launch vehicle interface management for all UK projects

2005: System engineering & bid management at Astrium GmbH Germany for the Swarm, GAIA, Don Quijote missions; Thermal engineering for the Phase A study of the BepiColombo and Sentinel-2 missions

2006-2009: Thermal architect of the Mercury Module Transfer for Astrium UK based in Germany for the implementation phase of BepiColombo

2009-2011: System Engineer for Astrium GmbH Friedrichshafen; study manager for the PLATO mission, platform system engineer for the EUCLID mission; worked on the Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter study (EMC & radiation design), consulted on cold gas thruster development with Thales Florence; designed a hydraulic filter system for the LTP scientifc instrument on the Lisa Pathfinder spacecraft. Spacecaft testing: LisaPathfinder (Munich) & BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter (Noordwijk)

2011-2012: Thermal systems engineer for the BepiColombo Mercury Transfer Module, managing the Astrium UK team on behalf of Astrium Germany.

2013- Senior Lecturer at UNSW Canberra / ADFA.
