Professor Scott Tyo joined the School of Engineering and IT at UNSW Canberra at ADFA in 2015 as the Head of the School and Professor of Electrical Engineering.

Before joining UNSW Canberra, he was a professor in the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona (2006–2015) and at the University of New Mexico (UNM, 2001–2006). After completing a Bachelor and Masters of Science in Engineering, Prof Tyo completed his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. He spent several years in the US Air Force (USAF) working as a researcher and an academic. Prof Tyo’s research included high power microwave systems and space-based remote sensing in the Directed Energy and Space Vehicles Directorates of the US Air Force Research Lab (AFRL). He was part of the military faculty at the US Naval Postgraduate School from 1999–2001 while serving as a USAF officer.

Prof Tyo’s research career focuses on imaging systems and high power microwave applications and he has written more than 200 publications (the majority being conference papers and journal articles). At UNSW, with Dr Andrey Alenin, he leads a small but diverse research group working on several aspects of applied electromagnetics and optics. Prof Tyo is also Editor-In-Chief of the SPIE Field Guides, which provide practicing engineers information and tips for the field and laboratory.
